Pile Driver
Workers who operate pile-driving rigs are, not surprisingly, pile drivers. Usually the first workers at the construction site, they drive metal sheet piling to hold back dirt during excavations. They drive concrete, metal or wood piling, or poles, into the ground to create the foundation for skyscrapers and hold up docks, wharves and bridges. In some cases, pile drivers work on offshore oil rigs and as commercial divers involved in underwater construction. Pile drivers are usually involved in the installation of heavy timbers that require cranes and expert rigging skills. Pile drivers also cut, join and fasten metal construction materials using welding equipment and oxy-acetylene torches.
